Writing Camps

A Note for all Writing Camps: In order to best serve the needs of a variety of families, most of our Writing Camps are flexible as to length and cost. Writing Camps range from single-day Camps, which are typically four hours long, to week-long Camps with two-hour blocks each afternoon. Many Writing Camps also have themes, such as "Heroes & Superheroes" and "Bringing Your Video Games to Life" which spark interest in kids.

School Writing Camp

Our School Writing Camp teaches young writers techniques for improving their expository, persuasive, and narrative writing. Each School Writing Camp presents an Introductory block, an Expository Writing block, a Persuasive Writing block, and a Narrative Writing block. Students produce 1-3 paragraphs of writing in shorter Camps and 3-5 paragraph essays in longer Camps.

Suggested Grade Range: 3rd to 8th grade students

Tuition: $150-$425

Creative Writing Camp

Our Creative Writing Camp explores narrative and creative writing. Writers participate in activities targeting dialogue, action, and other story components, spelling games, and collaborative and individual story writing. Writers in our shorter Camps produce a single short scene, while writers in our longer Camps produce a complete short story.

Suggested Grade Range: 3rd to 8th grade students or 6th to 12th grade students

Tuition: $150-$425

Improve Your ________ Writing

Our subject writing Camps include Improve Your English Writing, Improve Your History Writing, and Improve Your Science Writing. These quick two-hour Camps for older students teach students how to transfer skills learned in younger grades to subject-based writing. We also cover when using computer tools to improve writing is appropriate. Students receive grade-level prompts and create a complete 3 paragraph paper on the subject matter.

Suggested Grade Range: 6th to 12th grade students

Tuition: $80 per subject or $200 for families that enroll their children in all three subjects

Subject Writing Mastery Camp

Our Subject Writing Mastery Camp ties together multiple writing approaches in several core subjects. Students craft narrative stories from English prompts, write persuasive essays for English and history topics, and create shorter expository papers for history and science topics. This week-long intensive Camp grounds and hones students' subject-based writing.

Suggested Grade Range: 8th to 12th grade students

Tuition: $400

Foundations of Writing

Our Foundations of Writing Camp gives our youngest writers the tools they need to succeed early on. Students play lots of fun spelling games and use visual cues for grammar basics in this two-hour Camp. High-energy and collaborative, our Foundations of Writing Camp provides an easy and joyful entrance into writing. Students write one collaborative and one individual paragraph.

Suggested Grade Range: Kindergarten to 2nd grade students

Tuition: $75

Social Justice Writing

Our Social Justice Writing Camp teaches older students how to make real-world connections in their writing. Due to the sensitive nature of this Camp, we first lay a strong groundwork of respect for all people, including those who may have different races, genders, sexual orientations, (dis)abilities, socio-economic classes, or other identity markers than us. We then explore identity through autobiographical writing, craft letters to the editor about current issues, commemorate social justice heroes, critique media portrayals, and explore how to take a social justice angle in classwork. Students at shorter Camps write two 3-4 paragraph pieces. Students at longer Camps produce an essay and three shorter papers.

Suggested Grade Range: 6th to 12th grade students

Tuition: $200-$425

Build Your Own Camp

We know that families are the best experts available on the abilities and needs of their children. If your family needs a blend of two or more Camps, or if the next dates for the Camp you need to enroll in simply don't work for your family, we invite you to create a proposal for the Camp you want. Simply find six to ten children willing to enroll, agree on the elements and dates you would prefer, and send an email with that information to bayareawritingcampsforkids@outlook.com. Do you need help with your proposal? Here are some questions to get you started. We'll get back to you within three business days.
